Unit 4: Congress
1) Q3-Journal #1 3/10/15: Dear Congressman Hurt
Write a draft of a three-paragraph letter or email to Congressman Robert Hurt (R-VA 5th District).
a) 1st Paragraph: After “Dear Congressman Hurt,” introduce yourself (example: age, grade, school, government class, etc.)
b) 2nd Paragraph: Describe the issue/problem you would like Congressman Hurt to address and why this issue/problem is important.
c) 3rd Paragraph: Describe a possible solution to the problem [i.e. what do you think Congress should do about it?]

Journal #1 11/21/14: President Brain Dump
Brainstorm what you think the President does on a daily basis. Write down at least 5 things.
Journal #2 12/8/14: Presidential Power
Do you think modern Presidents (including Presidents Reagan, Clinton, Bush and Obama) are too powerful? Provide at least THREE reasons and/or examples to support your opinion.
Journal #3 1/13/15: Paris Terrorist Attack
The attack by radical jihadist on the Charlie Hebdo were motivated in part by the magazine’s publishing of cartoon’s satirizing the Prophet Mohammed.
1) In a brief paragraph, write down your reaction to the Paris attack.
2) What line would you draw between freedom of the press and offensive content? Are their times when the press should be limited? Defend your answer.
3) What do you think President Obama and the United States do in response to this terrorist attack? Explain your answer.

Reflect for a minute on the time you all have spent on the couch watching TV. In between your favorite shows you’ve watched tons of commercials—some convincing, others plain horrible. First, describe one television ad you have seen that caught your eye and may have convinced you to purchase a specific product or service. Second, think about what made that ad memorable. What techniques or strategies were used that made it an effective ad?

If you could write up your own Bill of Rights, what would you include? Write down at least five rights that you think you that everyone should have and provide a brief explanation (1-2 sentences) for each right.
